True Colours

How about the expression, true colours? When a person is put into a difficult situation, we sometimes remark that we've seen their true colours. It must relate to a reality that many people are masked, at least partially. At the point of tension, one's mask is difficult to maintain and the truth is revealed. Generally, the true colours are different than their mask.

Wearing a mask? What are your true colours? The Bible says that God made you for truth and rightness. It might actually be that you have yet to recognise your true colours, that is the truth of why you're here. Seeking God will bring you closer to your true colours.

Psalm 15:2 (NIV)
2 He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart

I like that. I have a similar motto that I try to live by:

Esse Quam Videri

It's the motto for my state of birth and my alma mater; it means, in Latin,

To be rather than to seem to be.

The heart beat of a study I did at University of Melbourne, “Image and reality” and formulas for discovering truth, perhaps leading onto “put not your faith in Princes.” Best Wishes to North Carolina and Raleigh I have good friends there, at the Uni.

Its nice to extend the Latin too: " Few are those who wish to be endowed with virtue rather than to seem so". coupled with "Light and Liberty" I really do not know where I stand on that but I know I always give to beggars not out of virtue but rather because I am a child of God.

I would like to add that you can see people's true colours in good times, not just bad. I have friends who have gloriously 'true' colours that shine often. Let's acknowledge those too!
