Baggage

When you're traveling, one of the greatest disappointments is when the airlines misplaces your baggage. If travel was ever a thrill, it has morphed into a series of inconvenience, line - waiting, cramped seating, flight delaying factors that render it less than thrilling. Whatever thrill present is dashed when the long wait at the baggage carousel reveals nothing of yours and directly precedes another line at the missing baggage desk.

If you know me, you know that I am not a complainer, and intentionally look for the positive. What strikes me about air travel today is that the costs are very high and those that work in the industry attempt to make this a good experience. It's most likely in the volume that the pleasure turns. We'd probably have less to complain about if we cut back on our baggage.

Luke 10:4 (MSG)
"Travel light. Comb and toothbrush and no extra luggage. "Don't loiter and make small talk with everyone you meet along the way."

Two years ago I was desperately trying to make it home from the SFOT in time for Christmas. I ended up sleeping on the floor of Newark airport, got luggage four days late- but I did make it home for Christmas! ~Karen~

This post reminds me of our family's trip from Toronto to Asbury Park for my mother's wedding on Thanksgiving weekend 1985. That adventure included a dead deer, a wrecked car, a snowstorm, a day on standby at Newark airport (with a toddler just under 2 years old) and far too much baggage.

Life is a journey too. How much baggage are we dragging with us? Some folks get so tied up with gathering baggage they forget to take the trip. When was the last time you stopped to look around, at a rainbow? or a waterfall? or the stars in the night sky? or into the heart of a flower? or breathed in the salt air of a seashore? or lay on the grass and watched the ants in their world? Did you dance in the rain and splash in the puddles? Do you take joy in the sheer beauty and wonder of the life God has given? If you need help, borrow a young child, they know how living should be. May your Christmas be blessed with love and truth and peace and may you dance into the coming year with the joyful heart of a child.
