Gratitude to God

This is a perfect day to thank God. You can do it in many ways. You can speak with Him in prayer. You can thank Him by serving Him. You can thank Him by worshiping Him. You can thank Him all day and anywhere.

What is it, do you suppose, that you do that expresses gratitude? Do you do this often? Did you thank Him yet today? Will you?

I thank God for His care. He leaves none of us out. He knows what we need. He blesses us with His closeness. Thank you, Lord.

SAGALA

For the uninformed, SAGALA stands for Salvation Army Group and Legion Activities. They are minimally active in the territory, but quite valuable where they are active. Major Mim Adams is the territorial representative of these programmes. Today's SAGALA is contemporary, exciting and worth checking out. Why not do so? I'm told it's becoming a great transition for children growing out of Mainly Music.

Our children deserve this kind of attention. Don't be quick to apply your memory of these programmes in the past discourage you from looking into them today.

John Cleary

Salvationist radio host, John Cleary spoke to the Wider Cabinet today with clarity and authenticity. He challenged us with a historic perspective on our beloved Army, its impact on today and tomorrow. In many ways it's a wake up call that's critically needed as we consider the way forward in the territory.

Soon, he will be releasing the Boundless Salvation Project, a collection of DVD documentaries on TSA. Look for it when it comes out. It will be worth your time.

Worship the Lord

Colonel Robert Redhead addressed the Wider Cabinet today on the subject of worship. He reminded us of our joys and responsibilities in worshiping God. His subject matter is flawless and his demeanor was thoroughly convincing.

In all, we learn that worship is a matter of the heart. Undoubtedly, this is the proper point of approach to God in worship. I'm glad. All of us can qualify and worship God in spirit and in truth. Hallelujah!

Envoys

With the transition of the Lieutenants rank, we have increased our population of Envoys in the territory. Many of them came this weekend to the Geelong Conference Centre for a retreat and reorientation opportunity. Each of them are beautifully committed and serving full on in officer appointments. With the continuing shortage of officers, we wouldn't be doing nearly as well without them. This is, without question, a good form of service by great people.

Looking for such an opportunity? Seek the Lord and speak with your Divisional Commander. Let's see what God has in mind.

CSM Tony Foster

The Corps Sargent Major of the Hobart, Tasmania Corps is Tony Foster. Since we've been in the territory and going to Tasmania, we are regularly blessed by the Tony's faithful service and constant witness. His example of Salvationism is exemplary and Christlike. If you want to be a leader in the corps, pay attention to CSM Tony Foster, a hero.

Loved ones, there are heroes among us. Pay attention...and maybe let them know how they are reflecting the glory of God. Hallelujah!

Officers Fellowship

There's much to be said for Officers Fellowships. We've enjoyed our time with the officers of the Western Australia Division. We've prayed together, praised God together, and read His Word together. It's been worth every minute.

All of us need the fellowship of believers. It's here that we can enjoy the presence of God and celebrate His love in comparable ways. God not only draws us together, He draws us close to Him. I recommend the getting together.

Western Australia

As a part of the Australia Southern Territory, the state division of Western Australia is quite remarkable. The people here, love it here and it's not hard to see why. It's just beautiful.

The SA is just as special. There's a friendliness here that is most desirable and Christlike. God is being honoured here by faithful servants who worship the Lord with joy and perseverance. Hallelujah!

The Word of God

The Bible is the written Word of God. It is here where we learn the love of God, His ways and our joys in following Him. We can read accounts of His interaction with His creation and the careful way in which He provides for us.

We learn of Jesus and His death on the cross of Calvary, We observe the discovery of His resurrection and the value it has for each of us who believe.

In the Word we begin to understand our role in His plan and how He has prepared a place for us in eternity.

Read the Word. Study its contents and learn to know the Creator. God will bless you as you do.

Perth Fortress

Thank you Holy Spirit for moving through the corps today at Perth Fortress. You spoke through the different parts of the meeting this morning and through Carolyn's message.

Tonight, in the city wide rally you again triumphed with so many in the house seeking your grace. Hallelujah!

Always seeking God

Don't give up seeking God. Continue to check every aspect of your life in comparison to what God is saying. He never changes, nor does His word. Our lives are so dynamic that we tend to see things differently at different points in our lives.

There are some things I have held to firmly as a young man that have taken a turn in my understanding. Maturity and life's experiences in the context of a deeper relationship with God have shaped me.

Consider the different place of people in their journey when relating to them. Just maybe they're only getting to where you are or passed that point a while ago.

Hence, always seeking God is the way to Go.

Creative Ideas

I love it when things have just become commonplace and someone enters with a creative idea. Yes.

I think it takes a mind free from excessive anxiety and distraction to contribute in this way. Perhaps we should do what we can to free up our thinking for creative ideas. The subjects that need such support are unlimited...evangelism, mission integration, communicating grace...approaching a culture that prefers not to acknowledge the Lord...engaging a grieving family...leading a young life in the right direction...empowering a believer to act in faith...and more.

Jesus has always been a part of creation. He would be a great support in creating ideas.

Security

Around the world, security is at an all time high. The treachery and cowardice of terrorists who send even the innocent to prey upon the innocent has forced the civilised to guard themselves. For this reason, we are caused to sacrifice certain freedoms that have always been ours. They are led by the enemy of enemies who has no regard for life.

For those who are human in this battle, God has made a way for redemption. The way is more powerful than any explosive and more strategic than laser guidance. The way is close to God. The way is His Son who has paid the ultimate price for all of our freedom and is free to us for the believing. His name is Jesus. Only in Him will we be really secure.

Candidates' Seminar

Majors Len and Marney Turner organised a powerful weekend at the Geelong Conference Centre. In worship of the Lord this morning, we saw God at work, encouraging individuals and couples to follow Jesus. Hallelujah!

We cannot downplay the need for officers in TSA. That starts with candidates for officership. Thank you, Lord for these who gathered to consider your grace and direction in their lives. May their journey glorify you.

Rugby League

And the Melbourne Storm is on top of the ladder. Tonight they won 46-0. We were there to validate the veracity of their performance. It's a good game and one that takes strength, intelligence and stamina.

Better than the game was who we went with. The game really was terrific, but the friends we were with made it a great night.It's always about the relationships. I thank God for my friends.

The enemy is real

Be on guard.

Recognise that there are forces at work that are diametrically opposed to the ways of God.

God's leading.

God's leading is a sentence and a complete thought. It means God is leading in this case. It's true. He is not static and cannot be described as non-influential. He always has affect, even though He will not break a bruised reed or stifle a smoking wick.

His leading is full of love and power and fulfillment. When you follow, so will joy and hope and excitement, as obvious as tin cans tied by strings on the back of a honeymoon car. Sounds great doesn't it?

Right decision

Making the right decision is often a great challenge. Once you get past the easy decisions, there are those where the right decision isn't absolutely clear. You know, where the choice is the best of the difficult or the least harmful?

We can get help from others and we can consult the Word of God, but some decisions are ours to make and just not found in the concordance to the Bible. Here's where staying close to God makes all the difference. Our relationship with Him will bring light to the circumstance and His truth will give us clarity to make the right decision. Enjoy it.

Be Like Jesus

Not only is this a good plan, it is the name of a new CD released by the USA Southern Territory. It is in preparation of their Holiness Congress. Listening to it today, I'm blessed and impressed. The concept is right and the music right too.

I wouldn't know how to get a copy apart from finding the territorial website and tracking it down. Sometimes getting to be like Jesus isn't easy.

Working it Through

Sometimes things need to be worked out. Conversation and dialogue are required to come to at least a consensus if not a solution. We can help by looking at the subject through the eyes of others and putting aside our differences.

The resolution is worth it and the open approach conveys respect to everyone involved. It is civilised and needed in this world. At least consider this perspective.

Red Shield Appeal

Today has been a particularly active day across Australia in TSA. Thousands of Salvos have gone door to door and street corner to street corner to receive the provision of God through generous Australians. The resources are used to improve the lives of over 1 million Australians in the course of the year. It is all worth it.

Thank you for every volunteer and every donor who are making it possible to help so many. God bless you each.

Spend time with those you love

As you can, spend time with those you love. It may sound simple and obvious, but there are times in our lives when we need such a reminder. Parents, don't let yourself be found to say, "I wish I had spent more time with my kids. They grew up too fast." Don't be found saying, "Now that my folks are gone, I should have taken more time to be with them."

There are other relationships that suffer simply because we don't get to it, or we don't do well to write letters or can't afford the calls. Measure the significance of your relationship and do what it takes to keep it alive. You'll be glad about it when you do.

Caring for People

We need to care for each other. Our relationships with others is our witness to the Holy Spirit within us. We glorify the Lord by such responsibilities.

Now this doesn't mean that we necessarily see things the same way as everybody else and there are moments when we have varying opinions. Is there a time for correction as well? Absolutely. Just read through the comments on this blog. Friends are trying their best to keep me on the straight and narrow.

Even when this is needed, caring for each other is helpful by both parties. It isn't always easy. Let's give it our best.

Welcome Home MSB

The Melbourne Staff Band returned home to THQ officially last night for their regular weekly rehearsal. Although I don't know how long they've been rehearsing elsewhere, they sounded great in the new band room or music room, as they share it with the MSS. Complete for the rehearsal was the visit of Bandmaster emeritus, Colin Woods, B/M Ken Waterworth (on leave) and guest conductor, Lt. Colonel Robert Redhead. For the record, the first piece the band played in the room was Reflections in Nature by Robert Redhead. It'll become a trivia question.

Let the record reveal that the MSB is important to the territory and to the Kingdom of God. The witness of their music reaches much further than the walls of their concert halls. Hallelujah!

NATSICA Launch

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian Alliance was launched today in Canberra. They represent Christian Aboriginals in Australia. We are greatly impressed with the individuals and churches involved in this alliance and believe that their efforts will be productive for all Australians, in particular, Aboriginals.

The Salvation Army is connected to the alliance in these early days and celebrates the launch and expectations of NATSICA. I believe we will make progress with this initiative and that God will bless what they will do in His name.

1 Corinthians 12:13 (MSG)
13 By means of his one Spirit, we all said good-bye to our partial and piecemeal lives. We each used to independently call our own shots, but then we entered into a large and integrated life in which he has the final say in everything. (This is what we proclaimed in word and action when we were baptized.) Each of us is now a part of his resurrection body, refreshed and sustained at one fountain—his Spirit—where we all come to drink. The old labels we once used to identify ourselves—labels like Jew or Greek, slave or free—are no longer useful. We need something larger, more comprehensive.

Business Community

In our focus on the least, the last, and the lost, remember that we have a responsibility to every person that God brings into our lives. This includes the business community, sales clerks, shop owners, night managers, business people, even CEO's.

The opportunities are endless...just like God's love. In each scenario we have a challenge to sort out the best approach and to seize the moment to the glory of God. Here's what I suggest:

1. be yourself - holy, transparent
2. depend on the Holy Spirit - He goes before you and travels with you.
3. convey the good news - in relevant, Biblical truth
4. ask for a response - trust and obey

Extra Help

Just when you've reached your extremes, God sends extra help. I believe He asks us to use what we have and when that is not enough, He steps in to prove His grace and help. We can count on Him.

What are you working on or are you near your goals? Be prepared for God to make it right. He's with you and knows not only our strengths but our weaknesses as well. Mix that with His awareness of our tomorrows and we need not be anxious about how to get through. We can, absolutely, trust Him. hallelujah!

Think of His love

Calmly, respectfully, faithfully, think of God's love. He created you for life filled with hope, joy and truth. This starts with our free choices. Love does not manipulate and God is love. The personal choice is incredibly important. Why did he put the one tree in the garden of Eden? All of us would be still in the garden, had he not, but it would have been as like puppets.

God love us too much to remove our choice to love Him. You don't have to love Him, but you should. His love is demonstrated in innumerable terms, beginning with the death of Christ on the cross. Can you think on these things? It will clear your mind and settle your heart. Hallelujah!

Adelaide Congress Hall Corps

In the history of the Australia Southern Territory, the ACH Corps has been a mainstay. They have proven the grace of God over and over through the years and are doing so today. Just now the corps is in pain over the promotion to glory of their corps officer, Major Cameron Wallace.

At the same time they are ministering to Cameron's family with deep love and understanding. The Celebration of his life service occurred today. The corps was present in full force. Let's continue in prayer for the Wallace family and the ACH Corps.

All walks of life

It takes all kinds of people to make up the Kingdom of God. He has chosen all different languages, personality types and nationalities to become His Kingdom. I'm grateful for His plan. We can enjoy the company of many people who love God and who seek Him for the best in their lives.

We can celebrate here this diversity in preparation for our eternity in heaven. Hallelujah!

God Leads the Way

On our daily road, we can count on God. He leads the way. We can look to the left and to the right. We can consider the diversions and turns in the road. We can skip, run or jump. We can be on gravel, dirt or concrete. God desires to lead us with love.

Our job: follow.

It need not be complicated, confusing or cantankerous. He receives you where you are and takes you where you need to go. Follow His lead today.

RSA Launch

The Red Sheild Appeal launch occurred today in Melbourne. The AXA corporation sponsored the event which was terrific. Mr. Andy Penn from AXA represented his company and many others by his kind remarks and challenge for Victoria to partner with TSA in our endeavors to serve so many people. Mr. Bernie Brooks of Myer was present to celebrate the proceeds of their Christmas recording which generated over $200,000. The state of Victoria presented $60,000 as well.

These donations will go a long way to help many people. Across Australia we will help over 1,000,000 people this year. The costs will be in excess of $68 million. We have much to do to raise that kind of resource. Thank you each who are helping as you can.

Seeing God

While the heavens declare the glory of God, we are made in His image. We can see Him by looking into others around us. In Biblical context, that understanding pre-exists the salvation of the individual. This is to say that we can see the image of God in every person.

God walked into my office today in the person of a couple of people. Each showed me His love, creativity, ingenuity and concern. God's amazing. He keeps me focused on Him if I keep my eyes open for Him.

Major Cameron Wallace

God has called Major Cameron Wallace home to glory. We delight in his eternal reward and celebrate what we who know Christ as Saviour will enjoy one day. At the same time our hearts are broken over the loss of his presence to his wife and family. The Adelaide Congress Hall Corps too will find difficulty without him.

Let us be in prayer for these loved ones and in gratitude for the life and person of Cameron Wallace.

Pray for the General

As we come before the Lord today, let us remember the General in prayer. General Shaw Clifton continues to lead The Salvation Army with courage, devotion and strength. He and Commissioner Helen Clifton benefit by the provision of God in their lives and depend upon Him completely. They're tremendous leaders.

Heritage

Our history gives a guide to not only our future but the essence of who we are. In terms of TSA, we have much to live up to. In terms of an individual, it may not be as simple. God's transformation of the individual makes the person's history a contrast of dark to light.

The heritage of TSA is mostly beautiful and crafted by God. Although far from perfect, it survives blemishes and difficult chapters because it continues to work towards the glory of God. May we maintain this hope and redeeming approach to mission.

Wilma Gallet

On the first Sunday we conducted corps meetings in Australia, we met Wilma Gallet. A soldier of the Ferntree Gully Corps, she is the celebrated founder of Employment Plus and an exceptional Christian lady.

Among her many accomplishments in the fields of social programme, she wrote TSA's response to the National Youth Commission's report on youth homelessness in Australia. it's called Finding My Place and it is a quality booklet that describes the mission of TSA among youth in Australia. Myanmar

Our friends in Myanmar are in need of our support. Prayers on their behalf will be valued. The death toll is incredible and rising. TSA is there and is serving on the ground in spite of major damage to SA facilities. Communication is difficult.

May God's grace prevail in the midst of such difficulty.

God Provides

In the flurry of life and in the day to day engagements, God provides.
In the complexities of our moods, uncertainties and joys, God provides.
The air we breathe...the sunlight that opens the day...the stars that sparkle...all validate that God provides.

He gives hope to the rejected, peace to the troubled, healing to the unwell, attention to the invisible, grace to the insecure, joy to the hurt, forgiveness to the penitent, understanding to the confused and love to all. That's just for starters.

Healthy Corps

This is an interesting concept that can serve our best intentions in glorifying God. When we measure such things, we must do so in a Biblical context with careful cultural appreciation. I suggest that a healthy corps is one that is paying attention to balance, growth, nourishment and applied faith. They can be small, medium, large or anywhere on any scale. They can be new, old or not so old. They can be urban, country or a mix.

Generally, a corps knows if it is healthy or at least where certain parts need attention. Acts 2:42 gives a good guide to healthy components.

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

Keeping the Faith

There are many temptations that will discourage and distract you from your faith. Be on your guard. What we call common sense can cause a shortage of faith as can intellectual assertion. How do we explain prayer apart from a relationship with a loving God?

The strength of our faith will enable us in moments of concern and hold us through the valleys in our lives. It's really God who is holding us, not faith in itself. Our choice...His grace. Hallelujah!

Encouragement

Here's an idea: be an encourager.

There are plenty who will put a person down or trim them down to size. Why not lift up someone? You might even find it refreshing.

Social Justice

This territory is on track with social justice. Under the leadership of Captain Danielle Strickland, our efforts are multiplying to glorify God. From fair trade to human traffiking and everything in between, we're learning more and more how to better engage our people in these areas of ministry.

Northern Victoria Division

With four SA divisions, the state of Victoria boasts of a remarkable expression of Salvationism. In the northern part we have the Northern Victoria Division. Well established and currently under the leadership of Majors Graeme and Karen Rigley, this division is real Salvation Army. They are mission focused and solid. When you serve with them you find integrity, balance and holiness.

Corporate Support

On this, when I am writing corporate, I'm not thinking so much of the collective, but the corporate world. More and more, companies are considering their corporate social responsibilities. This is good. TSA needs to more intentionally connect with the corporate world to include them in the joy of helping others I welcome their involvement.

Let's take a fresh look at these possibilities and consider opening the door to new relationships to advance the mission.

Alive and well

More than a simple expression of personal well being, alive and well would also be a description of God's plan for our lives. Jesus died so we might live and live well. The wellness part is not simply a statement of good health. I've known people dying of cancer who were alive and well.

The Revelation Project

The Waverley Temple Corps has been hosting The Revelation Project for three weeks now and has another week to go. It has included Sunday night meetings and mid-week Bible studies on the book of The Revelation.

We were blessed to be there tonight with over 200 to share in the experience. The music, the singing and the Word of God. What could be better? There is still a Bible study at 7:30 pm, Thursday and a concluding Sunday night meeting with Lt. Colonel Lucille Turfrey bringing the message.

Meeting People

Then we have a deeper joy. That is to help these new friends experience the love of God. They can see Him in us and maybe they begin to see the possibilities for themselves. This is known as the plan of God.

Phil and Sheila Smith

We're enjoying the company and ministry of Phil and Sheila Smith. Both gifted musicians, they have shared their music with audiences in Canberra this past weekend. In another week, they'll be returning to Melbourne for a programme with the Melbourne Staff Band.

Those in attendance this past week speak in positive terms of the positive witness of our guests. God's light is shining through them in beautiful ways. Let their superior music and message declare the glory of God.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness is one of the most significant gifts I know. When forgiveness is applied without conditions or deals, it is large and full of hope. It can bring joy to the forgiver and to the forgiven.

Someone has done you harm. You go to them and simply forgive them. No grudge. No payment. No memory. What do you think? Why carry the extra baggage of someone's debt to you? Give it a try.

Carrum Downs

The corps building and its people were dedicated today in Carrum Downs, Victoria. It was a grand occasion with a full house of regulars and visitors to the glory of God. Divisional Leaders Robyn and Ron Clinch supported the corps led by Captains Darren and Cathy Elkington.

This is a family centered worship where children are welcome and cared for. As it should be, all are welcome here. Hallelujah!

Commissioners Les and Coral Strong

Commissioners Les and Coral Strong celebrate the evidence of God in their lives today as we come together for their official retirement. Commissioner Ian Cutmore is present to represent the General in these ceremonies.

The Strongs are tremendous people with a lifetime of sterling service. Just before their leadership of the Australia Eastern Territory, they were the Chief Secretary and Territorial Secretary for Women's Ministries. in the great Australian Southern Territory.

Retired Officers

We met with the retired officers of Victoria this week. Led by Commissioner Brian Morgan, they represent many of our best Salvationists. When you consider the years of faithful service, you are immediately reminded of the faithfulness of God. He has kept these folks through challenging and peaceful times. They know it and witness to it.

Take a few minutes with a retired officer. You'll find gratitude, hope and holiness. These are all undeniable characteristics of lives lived in the joy and peace of Christ. Hallelujah!

Parliament Picnic

Generally, we don't consider Parliament a picnic. I'm referring to the Parliament of Victoria on whose steps the 614 Bus was parked. The Deputy Premier was on duty cooking up the sausages and doing quite a fine job.

The Premier too made an appearance, spending considerable time on the chess computer. It's up to him to reveal how the game turned out. All in all, a number of good politicians found their way to the steps of Parliament, saw this ministry opportunity and shared the moments with many street living people.

Youth Leaders

Having met briefly with many of the youth leaders in the territory this week, I'm inclined to restate the obvious. They are leaders. Their importance in our movement cannot be overstated. As I listened to them, I became more convinced of the veracity of their faith and the passion of their hearts. They are creatively engaged in warfare against the enemy in the name of Christ. New Corps Openings

There's all sorts of reasons to consider new corps openings. The best reason is the increased possibility to reach new people for Christ. This is why TSA exists...to bring people to Christ.

Going Forward

Two particular meetings today inspired my soul about going forward. One was a recap meeting about the Connections 07 feedback. The question in these sessions is, "What is God saying to TSA in this territory?" Some real direction is beginning to emerge. we have a bright and exciting future. Let's give Him our best in the process.

The second meeting was with a married couple who are serving God with integrity and joy. They very much represent our future and will undoubtedly be an important team in the going forward of our movement.

Mr. Derek Linsell

Mr. Derek Linsell of Apricot Consulting and the AFL Foundation gave a presentation at a breakfast meeting of Christian Management Australia this morning. His comments on Corporate Social Action were timely, practical and informative for the business persons present. The focus of the meeting is clearly Christian and how business persons can integrate their faith in their business community. The meetings are always worthwhile and this one was no exception.

You may know that Derek is from the great Colonels Frank and Jean Linsell family. He was an officer in earlier days and has not lost the passion of his commitment to Christ. He often benefits TSA in many ways. We thank God for him.

Training College

The Training College remains a favourite place to go. The Cadets and staff are invigorating. God comes close to us there. The focus on Him is strong and convincing.

Today was no exception. Training Principal Captain Stephen Court excels in his role and leads with a refreshing vigor and passion in the name of Christ. The whole team is solid and encouraging. I thank the Lord for them and commend them to the territory.

The Payer Warriors' session is terrific. They take the Word of God seriously and seek to please God through Jesus. Hallelujah!

National Youth Commission

The National Youth Commission released their findings today of their independent study of youth homelessness in Australia. It's a good report on a difficult reality. I recommend you acquire a copy or visit their website for more information at http://nyc.net.au/

Setting aside the statistical aspect of the report, just know that youth homelessness is a bigger issue than the availability of beds. It's about real young people with unique concerns that a simple formulaic response won't address. Captain Paul Moulds reminds us that the solutions begin to come into focus with personal relationships. This has to be a one to one effort. The Lord is with them and with us in these ways.

African Service

What is known as the African Service at the Darwin Corps is their Sunday Morning meeting on the first Sunday of the month. It is led and focused in an African style of worship. Based upon our experience this morning, the meeting is alive and God centered.

God is counting on us to reach all people in the world. This certainly includes Africans living in Australia. I'm grateful for the vision in the Darwin Corps. Hallelujah!

Kununurra, WA

There's a great work happening in Kununurra, WA. It is, actually, in the Northern Territory Region (within the great Australian Southern Territory) and is being led by Envoys Gill and Stephen Lefmann.

We enjoyed the celebration of a soldier enrolment today. Nellie looked terrific in her uniform and her witness to the saving power of Christ was strong. Thank you, friends for what you are doing in the name of Jesus in Kununurra. Hallelujah!

Crossroads

Not only is this a place to make a good decision, it is the name of our Social Programme Network within the Melbourne Central Division. Operated by a first class team of professionals, service for people with all types of concerns is given with great integrity. Thanks, Noelle for your ministry and that of your associates.

Just a day ago we enjoyed a spitroast BBQ with both the staff and many clients. The Moreland City Corps was there to connect and give support, complete with the band. The food was great as was the fellowship we each enjoyed. Congratulations Crossroads for creative programming and a heart to bring us all together.

Powerless

For two days after a blog on Strength, our quarters has been powerless. A storm knocked out our electricity and we're still waiting for it to be repaired. Several trees came down in the neighborhood. Had we still been in the office in Mont Albert, we would have had two days off work...another good reason for the relocation.

In between strength to strength, we might have periods where we feel powerless. Apart from the strength of God, it is our realistic condition. The power is given to accomplish God's purposes and to bring glory to His name. Other power plays are pointless.

6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.

Strength

I like that line in the song, Great is Thy Faithfulness that says, "Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow..."

God's plan for us includes His strength. He knows our weaknesses because Jesus was tempted just as we are. When you consider His encounter with the enemy in the desert, He proved His capacity, strength and resolve. This same measure is ours for the asking.

The strength leads to a bright tomorrow. I can't wait...but will.

The Oasis - the film

Only moments ago we viewed the documentary film known as The Oasis, produced by Shark Islands Productions. Mark it in your coming attractions. ABC TV (Australia) will be showing it on Thursday night 10th April for the whole country to see. I would only recommend it for adults to view, but commend it to them wholeheartedly.

There are no less than 22,000 homeless youth in Australia. 1,000 of them stay at a SA facility each night. Meet a few of them and witness their revealing journeys in this documentary. God help us.

Moreland City Corps

This morning at the Moreland City Corps in Melbourne, God moved in a beautiful way over the congregation following a good message by Commissioner Barry Pobjie. I'll not attempt to describe it here for fear I may not do it justice and trivialize the experience. Just let it be understood that God is moving among us. Hallelujah!

God is calling us to see a larger than local picture of His Kingdom. Let us do so with integrity and personal involvement.

THQ Buildings
National, Australasian, Australian and Australia Southern

With the Army established in Australia and spreading out from Adelaide, Major James Barker determined that the National Headquarters would be in Melbourne.

1. 20 IZETT STREET, PRAHRAN
In January 1883, Melbourne’s third Corps was started at Prahran, in a small building in Izett Street. “These premises also were used by Major James Barker as Australia’s first National Headquarters and training home.” [War Cry (London), 14/3/1883.]

2. 52 BOURKE STREET WEST (now 415 Bourke Street), MELBOURNE.
Also, early in 1883, the Army moved into rooms in a building grandly designated “Cardigan Chambers”, located at 52 Bourke Street. Majors James and Alice Barker used part of the premises as their quarters. This was in effect a “city office” for the Australasian Headquarters soon to be established.

3. 288 COVENTRY STREET, SOUTH MELBOURNE.
The first (proper) Australasian Headquarters was opened in July 1883 at Coventry Street, being leased by The Salvation Army for 5 years. Previously it was Mendes’ “Academy Theatre” and it also housed the Army’s Printing Works and Trade Department. There was a hall seating 1500, as well as a smaller hall suitable for officer-only meetings. It was registered as a place of worship. Training for Cadets was carried out in an adjoining house.

4. 75 EXHIBITION ST (later 159-161 Exhibition Street) MELBOURNE. (nb: called Stephen St before 1888)
To cater for the rapid growth through 1884, and the influx of staff heralded by the impending arrival of Colonel Ballington Booth and Major T Henry Howard, Major Barker secured the lease of two three-storied shops near the corner of Exhibition and Bourke Streets for use as the Australasian Headquarters. Previously it had been used for the sale of second-hand clothing. The Army occupied it for 3 years in conjunction with the Headquarters building in Coventry Street, which was also the premises for the South Melbourne Corps.

5. 122 EXHIBITION STREET, MELBOURNE. (nb: called Stephen St before 1888)
An ex-lodging house, this three-storied building in Exhibition Street was leased from 1888 to 1889 as the Australasian Headquarters. The rear of the building abutted two smaller buildings that opened into Little Collins Street, and served as an annex.

6. 187 LITTLE COLLINS STREET, MELBOURNE.
In April 1890. a five year lease was secured for a newly completed building in Little Collins Street. The War Cry referred to it as the Inter-Colonial Headquarters and Publishing Offices for Australia and Tasmania. The following year, with the expansion of operations, number 185 Liile Collins Street was also taken..

7. 69 BOURKE STREET, MELBOURNE.
The YMCA built the 69 Bourke Street premises in 1891, however due to the land and bank crash in 1892, the consequent depression forced the building onto the market, where it was quickly grabbed by Commissioner Coombs in 1894, the become the Headquarters for Australasia. The YMCA was pleased that the premises would continue to be used for Christian work, and to pay for the purchase, Commissioner Coombs put a levy on every Officer and Soldier in the Territory. In 1912 it changed from the Australasian Territorial Headquarters to the Australian Territorial Headquarters; and then in 1921 became the Australia Southern Territory Headquarters. When THQ moved to Park Street in 1884, the Melbourne Central Division Headquarters remained, until its relocation at the end of 2006. It is of note that every General of The Salvation Army, except the present incumbent, has preached from the platform of The City Temple, which forms a major part of this building.

8. 39 PARK STREET, SOUTH MELBOURNE.
In 1983, 100 years after the opening of the first Australasian Headquarters, the Army purchased a premises not too distant from the original 1883 one in South Melbourne. The new Australia Southern Territory Headquarters was officially opened in April 1884. Some ten years later, in September 1993, a decision to relocate was made, as Park Street was considered inadequate in size and potential. Due to the recession, a most attractive opportunity to purchase another premises presented itself at Mont Albert. In June 1994 Park Street was auctioned.

9. 5 HAMILTON STREET, MONT ALBERT
The new Australia Southern Territory Headquarters building at Mont Albert was a 3 level retail/office building constructed in the late 1980s. It was officially opened on 6 August 1994. Room for expansion again became a problem, with some THQ Departments unable to be accommodated in the same building. THQ moved from Mont Albert to Blackburn in March 2008.

God's Will

Finding and knowing God's will is a delight of life. It is totally about trusting Him.

Training Cadets

Our Cadets are fortunate for the training they're receiving. I do have the sense they appreciate the opportunities that are theirs. We stopped by there today with Commissioners Barry and Raemor Pobjie, The Zonal Leaders for the South Pacific and Eastern Asia Zone of TSA.

Maundy Thursday

This is a very special day in Scripture.

The word Maundy is derived through Middle English, and Old French mandé, from the Latin mandatum, the first word of the phrase "Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos" ("A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you"), the statement by Jesus in the Gospel of John (13:34) by which Jesus explained to the Apostles the significance of his action of washing their feet. The phrase is used as the antiphon sung during the "Mandatum" ceremony of the washing of the feet, which may be held during Mass or at another time as a separate event, during which a priest or bishop (representing Christ) ceremonially washes the feet of others, typically 12 persons chosen as a cross-section of the community. Holy Week

I enjoy the way this week draws the attention of much of our society. It's a prime opportunity to share the realities of the love of God. Following the Scriptures in this week of Christ's life is rich with meaning and hope.

B/M Noel Jones

Australia knows that Noel Jones is a Real Estate Agency. The world and Salvationists know him as a great musician. In addition to his extraordinary abilities to compose Christian music, Noel is a terrific Bandmaster and a Salvation soldier.

Eastcare

What do you call the people who faithfully work at TSA's Eastcare in Melbourne? You call them great people. You were expecting 'Eastcarers' or 'Eastcare givers?'

I met with a few of our choice Social Programme Salvos (my inclusive definition) today with stops in Croydon, Box Hill and Hawthorn. They're simply amazing. It makes me shout, 'thank God for the Salvos!'

Camberwell Corps

Palm Sunday at the Camberwell Corps was a beautiful experience. Thank you, Majors Pratt and your team for making it right. The meeting was crafted appropriately and the music was terrific. Many people made us feel welcome and the message spoke to our hearts.

Our Army is blessed with all different types of worship experiences that each honour God who meets our needs and desires our love. Hallelujah!

Timbrels

Timbrels were flying and timbrellists were everywhere at Waverley Temple Corps tonight. Miriam would have been excited. The hall was filled for performances by the Waverley Sr. and YP Timbrels, the Launceston, Tasmania Timbrels, and the Cranbourne YP Timbrels. The Melbourne Veteran's Band was on duty to thrill us all with their music.

The Scriptures encourage us to praise the Lord with Timbrel and dance. That describes much of what we witnessed tonight. It takes hard work to do what they do and I'm convinced God is delighted. We could do with more of this in the territory.

Advisory Board

The heart of a good Advisory Board continues to be the Advisory Board members. We have an extraordinary Advisory Board in Melbourne. Each member is dedicated to the mission of TSA and give themselves in this process to better our situation and improve our service.

God continues to bring amazing people alongside us to serve Him effectively. He sustains His work and His workers. Thank you, Lord for each of these who support your cause.

16 honor and look up to people like that: companions and workers who show us how to do it, giving us something to aspire to.

Certainty

Certainty can be a luxury. Some people seem to be able to get there quicker than others. There are those who need to explore every avenue of a decision before they can make a choice. Even then, they are somewhat uncertain.

Feelings can get in the way of a good decision. Lack of information is a common distraction to certainty.

You see, there is a place for trust in everyone's life. Most often we trust those we love. We ought always trust God...with certainty.

Proverbs 3:5 (MSG)
5 Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don't try to figure out everything on your own.

Tests

So we take tests to see how we're doing. An exam in school or an eye exam at the optometrist, both are to determine our place, status, progress or regression. When we refuse such things, it doesn't allow us the awareness of our condition.

Some people don't like to go to the doctor because it's there where they find out when something's wrong. It's a false security, but I can relate to the situation.

God tests us. We can avoid it, ignore it, pray it away, or prove it. I'm going with God's plan.

Cooperation

When I consider the multiple tasks required at THQ today it confirms the expression, "many hands make light work."

I'm really proud of the team who worked hard (as usual) to move into the new address. Even our Emergency Disaster Team came alongside to help.

John Dalziel OOF

I understand why John was presented with the Order of the Founder. There's no way the citation included all he has done and continues to be in The Salvation Army.

When the concept of Connections '07 was forming, I met with him (for the first time) and identified with all I was told about him. The record will reveal that as the event chairman, he guided the course with intrepid and intelligent leadership.

He continues to serve in the Camberwell Corps with distinction. Hallelujah!

Thank you Lord, for this man who follows you whole heartedly.

Bairnsdale, Victoria

At the outer limits of the eastern part of our territory stands a corps with good leadership and dynamic vision. We visited Bairnsdale today for worship and valued the experience immensely. Captains Templeman-Twells are serving with distinction and especially composed on short notice of our visit.

The soldiers too were very warm in their friendliness to us and other visitors on this holiday weekend. This is a beautiful corps with growing potential for the future. Thank you friends for honouring God today in worship and fellowship.

Prayers for a New Neighbourhood

Whilst moving into a new neighbourhood, we attempt to be salt and light to the Blackburn community. It would be interesting to assess the impact we've had in Mont Albert. I get the financial impact, but what about the spiritual?

We must do so in Blackburn. We've been praying through the streets and for all the transitions in lives. Now, Lord, enable us to reveal your glory in practical ways in this new community. Please help us to be effective in our witness and resolve to follow you in every way.

Historic Day

The Salvation Army Australia Southern Territory left its headquarters building in Mont Albert today for the last time. On Tuesday, we will formally resume ministry on Railway Road in Blackburn at the new headquarters.

God bless the movement of The Salvation Army.

Heroes

I'm beginning to feature heroes on the right column. The first is a Leading Lady - General Eva Burrows. The thirteenth General of The Salvation Army, she continues to show the grace and leadership to all of us in her faithful journey in life.

Her ministry today is neither limited to Melbourne nor to the 614 New Life Centre where she regularly serves her Lord in TSA with continued integrity. In these past few years, she has traveled extensively around the globe in large demand for very good reason.

Thank you General Eva Burrows for showing us God in your loving, capable service to Him.

Luke 22:26 (MSG)
26 It's not going to be that way with you. Let the senior among you become like the junior; let the leader act the part of the servant.

Mixed Signals

Worse than a red light is a traffic light that's not working. What do we do? We look carefully both ways, a few times, and then we go when it's clear.

Sometimes we get mixed signals. It can come from our own expectations and a self focused perspective. When we're able to see things from another person's place, the signals can clear up a bit. I'm afraid mixed signals can complicate things your whole life. We can be on guard if we're disciplined, but just when you least expect it, someone throws you a curve.

Why don't we help the cause by not sending mixed signals?

Steps

A child only learns to walk by its first steps. An adult with a leg injury only begins to walk with first steps. You and I will never arrive at our destination without taking steps.

Why not take a step today? Trusting God? Take a step. Doing it in faith even means taking that step without the certainty you have where you're standing.

Trusting God

One of the beautiful aspects of faith is how we can trust God. Yes, we trust Him for who He is, who He is making us and much more. I celebrate how we can trust each other because we trust God.

Often, when someone is stretching my imagination, I am able to go forward with them, simply because I'm trusting God for them. It's one of His gifts to us.

Trusting completely? It probably means more than we know.

Romans 4:14 (MSG)
14 If those who get what God gives them only get it by doing everything they are told to do and filling out all the right forms properly signed, that eliminates personal trust completely and turns the promise into an ironclad contract! That's not a holy promise; that's a business deal.
